What is President’s Day?

President’s Day is a public holiday occurring on the 3rd Monday of February every year celebrating the birthday of the first president of the United States George Washington and secondarily the 16th president of the United States Abraham Lincoln. Before 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, the holiday was traditionally celebrated on George Washington’s actual Birthday the 22nd of February. After this act the holiday has been celebrated and will continue to be celebrated before his birthday also commemorating the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on the 12th of February. An important part of this holiday is also to note that it is different depending on the state in which you live in the United States. Although the difference is extremely subtle in some cases, there is still a difference that can be demonstrated below:

  • Presidents' Day in Hawaii, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, and Washington
  • President's Day in: Alaska, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming
  • Presidents Day in: Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, and Oregon
  • Washington's Birthday/President's Day in: Maine
  • Lincoln/Washington/Presidents' Day in: Arizona
  • George Washington Day in: Virginia
  • Washington's Birthday in: Illinois, Iowa and New York
  • Lincoln's and Washington's Birthday in: Montana
  • Washington–Lincoln Day in: Colorado, Ohio
  • Washington and Lincoln Day in: Utah
  • Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday in: Minnesota
  • George Washington/Thomas Jefferson Birthday in: Alabama
  • George Washington's Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day in: Arkansas

The holiday further commemorate the veterans and Purple Heart recipients in addition to congressional recognition.
